S - Learning Outcome 6
This past week I was able to participate in a service event where we were preparing food for hungry people over Thanksgiving. It was nice because we were working on a project that tackles hunger which is happening all over the world and affects millions of people. We had a group of people that was unloading the raw turkeys from a truck that had shipped a lot of them to where we were working. Another group was unpacking them and cutting them in half so they would be easier to cook. A third group was seasoning them and transporting them to the large smokers that we were using to cook them as efficiently as possible. There were a couple of hours that were slower because the smokers were full so we were waiting for a group of the turkeys to be cooked so we could put the next group in. There was also a group working inside packaging vegetables and mashed potatoes and other sides so they could be delivered with the turkey. This year doing this project was a little bit harder because we had to not only work practicing social distance rules, but all of the food had to be packaged separately and carefully cleaned so that nothing was at risk of being infected so that we could make sure everything was safe. It was fun and a great experience to be able to do what I can to help try to eliminate hunger even if its only for a little while.
